I have a webhosting & graphic design business, do I need a business license?

I have a webhosting and webdesign business over at http://batlightning.org (check it out if you need hosting, we have cheap plans!)

I was wondering if me and my other staff member need a business license? Is not having one illegal?

Any help is appreciated.

Chosen Answer:

Yes, you should apply for a business license to obtain a tax identification number which may be required for many freelance jobs. Many things associated with your personal business can be written off on your taxes, so you need to keep accurate records. Additionally, I would recommend getting a business checking account to keep track of all monies received which will help when it comes time for taxes. Its better safe than sorry when it comes to the irs, so start protecting yourself now.

It depends on were you are. But most places. YES. Its illegal to have a business running with out one. If they find out you could be shut down
